A message from the LEARN Team

As educators and parents, we get it - and we are all in this together. Remember to take it easy and be kind to yourselves. This is uncharted territory for most of us, and an opportunity to slow down and do less, rather than more. Many parents are feeling pressured to do school-like activities at home, but we see this as an opportunity for young people to develop creativity, learn new skills, and take a greater autonomy in their learning. Below you will find some resources to keep your children curious and engaged at home.

Online Homework 101 Webinar: Rita Rwigamba, Community Literacy Worker at Frontier College, provides parents with a step-by-step guide on how to support their children with online homework at home and provides parents with free resources to help incorporate literacy into their daily activities at home. - Watch

Family Literacy Webinar: We all believe that parent and family involvement is important and that it can make a difference in how well children do in school. A parent’s role is fundamental, not supplemental. Rita Rwigamba, Community Literacy Worker at Frontier College, will share what literacy means in the family context, the goals and benefits of family literacy, how to discover a child's learning style and will share free activities that can be used to promote literacy at home. - Watch

Supporting Families Through School Transitions: Pre-teen development can be challenging, yet it is an important life stage. In partnership with QFHSA, Karen Delage, Family Life Educator will identify strategies and tools that support critical thinking and the development of your children's autonomy as they head into young adulthood. I enjoyed Sheldon's webinar about spring migrating birds in multiple ways. He started it with a broader scope of the birds' biology, such as migration paths across North America. It was scientifically intriguing. For the bird identification, he kept my interest and focus throughout the webinar, with effective use of bird songs and side stories and backgrounds of some birds. It has been useful for self-training for bird identification skills and to share the lecture with my little boy at any time we want. -Makoto Nagano
