Supporting Families in the Transition to School

LEARN has been supporting early childhood initiatives through its network of community schools (CLCs) for over 12 years. Schools often work with Community Organizations to offer services to children 0-5 and their parents in a variety of workshops and events. These parent-and-tot sessions are often a great way to learn about the services and opportunities available at school and in the community, to help prepare families for the eventual transition to preschool or Kindergarten. 

My Goodnight Bag is a bedtime routine kit for children aged 3 to 5 and their families, developed to complement ongoing initiatives that support families (parent workshops, family engagement initiatives and/or early literacy initiatives), guided by a partnership between CLC schools and local community organizations. 

The Family Edition of the Linguistic Risk-Taking Passport is an initiative that encourages students to develop their second-language skills outside the classroom and to help build their confidence in their second language with the help of their family and community. 

In February 2020, LEARN’s Provincial Resource Team co-hosted an intersectoral Early Childhood Symposium. This brought together more than 200 partners from all levels of education, community and government agencies from across Quebec to deepen their knowledge and amplify their collaborative practices to better support children and families in the English-speaking community.
